The Outer Hebrides, or Western Isles, include the islands of Lewis, Harris, North Uist, Benbecula, South Uist, Eriskay and Barra. The ‘Long Island’ of Lewis and Harris is one land mass, but two distinct islands.

On the west coast of Lewis in the district of Uig lies the small island of Great Bernera. Usually referred to simply as Bernera, the island is approximately 5 miles long by 2 miles wide and was only connected to Lewis by a road bridge in 1953. The name Bernera is of Norse origin, as are many place names in the islands, and apparently in honour of a Norse Chieftan’s father called Bjarnar.
There are lovely walks with marvellous views around the coast on Bernera and the beautiful sandy beach at Bosta is a firm favourite with locals and visitors. The stunning uninhabited island of Little Bernera lies to the north of Bosta.
Sites to visit on Bernera include a replica of an Iron Age house, Norse Mill and Lobster Pond. Details of walking routes and visitor attractions throughout Lewis and Harris are available for guests in the house.
We often see Golden Eagles soaring overhead and the occasional Sea Eagle. Otters are regularly spotted, seals are common visitors and the occasional pod of dolphins or porpoises grace us with their presence. The islands have so much to offer, such as opportunities for walking, wild swimming, fishing, kayaking, bird watching and photography.
The neighbouring area of Uig is beautiful and boasts some truly magnificent beaches and soaring hills.

The ancient Calanais Standing Stones are only 20 minutes from Creagan Glas. The well preserved ruins of an Iron Age broch can be explored at the Carloway Broch. A restored village provides a living museum and cafe at the Gearrannan Blackhouse Village.
An insight to traditional Hebridean houses can be experienced at the Arnol Blackhouse Museum.
Follow the west coast to the most northerly point and witness the power of the Atlantic Ocean at the Butt of Lewis Lighthouse
The main town is Stornoway on the east coast of Lewis where you will find supermarkets, retail outlets and hospitality venues. The culture and heritage of the islands is on display in Museum nan Eilean Stornoway. A creative hub and cinema is situated in An Lanntair Arts Centre
A visit to Harris is highly recommended as a day trip from Bernera. Explore majestic hills and the awesome beaches at your leisure.
World famous Harris Tweed is available from a number of outlets and some weaving can be observed. Visit the The Harris Tweed shop, the Borrisdale Tweed Shop and Taobh Tuath Tweeds, to name a few.
Stop in Tarbert to visit the Isle of Harris Distillery, the Essence of Harris and Blamire at Harris.
Travel along the west coast beside the azure seas and white sands, perhaps call in to Tala Na Mara and then visit the 16th Century St. Clements Church in the village of Rodel.
